Ironic Twist

Here’s something that’s been bothering me for a while. Why is Julie Cooper-Nichol’s 1980s porno tape called The Porn Identity if The Bourne Identity didn’t come out until the 2000s? I’m pretty sure porn movies don’t get named after spy novels, only after blockbuster movies. So what’s going on, huh?
I was surfing Salon.com after I typed the previous paragraph, and apparently I’m not the only one bothered by this. Heather Havrilesky writes:
Nitpick alert: Why the hell was her bad porno, supposedly shot in the '80s, called "The Porn Identity"? I don't remotely care about such details typically, but this was just a lazy, sloppy choice the likes of which I cannot abide, particularly given the normally sharp wits of "The O.C.'s" writers.
Great minds think alike. Only some of them get paid to watch TV and others don't.
Here’s a Hint is right, I’m going to be seeing The Cause at Staccato tonight, breaking my "no Adams Morgan on a weekend night" rule. Yes, I go to see this band a lot because they’re my friends, so I’m going to keep seeing them and mentioning it here since I mention all the shows I go to.
Tomorrow night, French Kicks at Black Cat. I’ve seen them three times now, I think, and they’re really good when they’re not fall-down drunk and the sound system at the Black Cat is cooperating. The highlight for me is always “Close to Modern,” from their last CD. Download “Trial of the Century,” the title song from their latest.
Did you know Kelly Osbourne has a clothing line? And a new single called "One Word"?
Yeah, I’m going to listen to it when I get a chance. Kelly's second, Linda Perry-produced album is coming out this summer. I’ve read that it’s a new-wave, dance, 80s retro album, not pop-punk like her last album, which I was never tempted to hear in its entirety, although I did almost go to see her at the Black Cat.
If no one told you this was Kelly Osbourne, would you even think that that’s who the girl in the picture is?

30 Odd Foot Of Grunts break up, no one except Russel Crowe cares. (Via IMDb.)
American version of The Office premieres tonight on NBC, luckily not in conflict with The O.C. Ryan's throwing punches tonight, alright!
Maybe it's the rainy, gloomy weather, but I've been enjoying music of the atmospheric, somewhat mopey variety. Yesterday, Long-View's Mercury, which is growing on me. Today, British Sea Power's Open Season, which is a damn beautiful album. Long-View will be at the 9:30 Club with Dogs Die In Hot Cars and Phoenix on March 31. British Sea Power will be at the Black Cat on May 12, with Feist. I think I'll be at both of those shows.

Q: How many Canadians does it take to play uninspiring, dischordant indie rock? A: Six.
BV says it's because there's a rule that all Canadian bands have to have at least six people on stage at all times. Seriously, though, unless you're a synth-rock band, you don't need more than one keyboard player. And even then... Expecially considering that one of The Dears' keyboard players was sort of just standing there most of the time, poking one key at a time.
The unfortunate thing is that I could feel that some of their songs had the potential to be good, but the band was not playing cohesively and songs went from being pretty and promising one minute to clangy and unpleasant the next. Maybe The Dears are just not a good live band. Here's a picture:
One word review of last night's The Dears/The Soundtrack of Our Lives show: "Eh." Four word, one number review: "I missed 24 for this?"
I got some good, closeup shots of The Soundtrack of Our Lives, which will be posted later.
Moving on... It appears that now that DC 9 has cornered the market for 9:30 Club afterparties and guest DJs, they're trying to break into the lucrative iPod DJ business. Maybe I'll check it out, but I'm an iPod Jukebox girl at heart. After all, if not for them, I might have never gotten to appear on the morning news in Germany.
If you're curious, the DC 9 take on iPod DJing happens Sunday, April 17, and is called "Fifteen Minutes of Fame." I guess their selling point is that they give you three more minutes than that other iPod DJ night...

WeirdCurves interviewedJoy Zipper's Tabitha Tindale for her blog. Neat-o.
Do you like blues-y, catchy, retro-ish garage rock from Detroit? Oh, you do, do you? Well, check out The Sights. Download their new single "Circus" or stream it, if you'd like. "Circus" comes off their self-titled CD, and if you like it, chances are you'll like the CD. Some of the songs are a bit more down-tempo, but I enjoyed the whole thing. Too bad their spring tour isn't bringing them too D.C., because I bet they put on a rockin' show.
And don't forget to enter this week's bluestate giveaway contest.
